Chirripó National Park is home to the highest mountain peak in Central America. Located in the middle portion of the Talamanca Mountain Range approximately 30 km northeast from the city of San Isidro del General, Chirripo National Park protects a number of important ecosystems on the Costa Rican Pacific slope, preserving a number of plants, animals, fungi and insects; some of which are under study by the scientific community. The name “Chirripo” means “Land of the Eternal Waters”.
Chirripo National Park encompasses parts of three Provinces in Costa Rica - San Jose, Limón and Cartago. The climate consists of two seasons; a dry season and a wet season. Chirripo National Park is among the most exciting attractions for locals and tourists from around the world. Hikers experience a 16 km uphill walk on the trail from the town of San Gerardo de Rivas to the park ranger's refuge in the Crestones sector and rest-up for the next 5 km walk to the peak. The mountains in this area are covered in thick primary cloud and rainforest to about 9,000' elevation. From there, the Paramo, or wet desert is the primary ground cover. There is more than 8,000' of elevation change from the San Gerardo Station to the peak at Mount Chirripo, Costa Rica. Vegetation and climate conditions change with elevation, and temperatures can be below freezing at certain times of the year. Considering that Chirripo is the 38th most prominent peak in the world, this journey is a once in lifetime experience for most tourists. No technical climbing or mountaineering expertise is necessary to reach the peaks in the Park, but the steep trek is approximately a 30 mile round trip, and typically planned for 3 days.
Getting to Mount Chirripo….
To reach Chirripo National Park Costa Rica, take the Interamericana Highway out of San Jose to Cartago, then continue to San Isidro de El General. From there, take the road that leads to San Gerardo de Rivas.
Los Crestones Base camp is equipped with bunk beds, a cooking area, and cold showers. Reservations are required.
